-Approximately 11.8 million U.S. adults will need but not receive mental health treatment or counseling services (SAMHSA, 2018)
-Approximately 22.5 million adults and children will need but not receive treatment for alcohol or illicit drug use (SAMHSA, 2018)
-By 2025 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2016) predicts shortages for psychiatrists, clinical, counseling, and school psychologists, mental health and substance abuse social workers, school counselors, and marriage and family therapists.
-Only a small percentage of behavioral health practitioners have diverse backgrounds (6% psychologists, 13% social workers, 21% psychiatrists) (American Hospital Association, 2016)

- Increase the number of racial and ethnic minority students prepared to enter behavioral health fields;
- Increase student awareness of careers in behavioral health;
- Assist students with continuing their education in behavioral health;
- Establish partnerships among HBCUs and other organizations to share resources and strategies to strengthen their capacity to recruit and train students for careers in substance use, mental and co-occurring disorder treatment.
